CANADA OPENS ITS DOORS FOR INTERIM PATHWAY APPROVED CAREGIVERS

In an update issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) on March 21, 2019, it has been stated that applicants approved for permanent residence under Canada’s Interim Pathway for Caregivers can also apply for a Canadian Open Work Permit (OWP) program.

Besides, the candidates are facilitated to submit the Open Work Permit application along with their application for permanent residence. However, IRCC has specified that it will start the processing for Open Work Permit only when the candidates qualify the IRCC’s eligibility test for the pathway.

What is Interim Pathway for Caregivers?

For the uninitiated, the Interim Pathway for Caregivers has been opened to cater the in-home temporary overseas caregivers, who came to work in Canada under the Caring for Children or Caring for People with High Medical Needs pilot programs after November 30, 2014. This temporary pathway was opened by Canada on March 4, 2019, and will remain open till June 4, 2019.

Eligibility Criteria for Open Work Permit

The applicants approved for the interim pathway for caregivers have to meet the following eligibility criteria before applying for Open Work Permit:

  • The candidate should be residing in Canada at the time of submission of application.
  • The candidate should intent to reside in any province or territory in Canada other than Quebec.
  • Should have one of the following statuses while applying for the Open Work permit.
  1. Authorized to work in Canada with a work permit different from the Live-in Caregiving Program work permit
  2. Authorized to work without a work-permit if applied for renewal of a work permit other than Live-in Caregiving Program work permit.
  3. Eligible for the restoration of status, applied for restoration of status and holding a work permit as a recent permit besides the Live-in Caregiving Program work permit.
  • The candidate should be residing in Canada at the time of submission of application.
  • The candidate should intent to reside in any province or territory in Canada other than Quebec.
  • Should have one of the following statuses while applying for the Open Work permit.

Open Work Permit for family members of eligible Interim Pathway applicants

It should be noted that the Open Work Permit is also permissible for the family members of eligible Interim Pathway applicants. If the spouse, common-law partner, or dependent of the eligible candidate resides and qualifies the eligibility criteria, then they may apply for Open Work Permit.

The Interim Pathway applicant and the family member will be charged a fee of $155 while forwarding the application. However, they are exempted from paying the permit holder fee of $100.
