Canada banned flights arriving from the United Kingdom in the enhanced effort to control the spread of coronavirus from December 20, 2020 at midnight. It was announced on Twitter by senior Canadian government officials including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the Minister of Public Safety Bill Blair.

Blair said the travel restrictions were going to be in place for at least 72 hours, after which Canada will re-evaluate this policy. Which means the travel will be restricted for next 3 days. In addition, travelers who arrived from the UK before ban were subject to enhanced secondary screenings.

In a press release, the Canadian government said the decision to suspend travel from the UK is due to the reported spread of a new strain of the coronavirus in the United Kingdom. Little is known about the strain, but the press release noted that the Canadian government and health experts around the world are studying the new strain to better understand its implications.

The government has invested $40 million to support the Canadian COVID-19 Genomics Network to help study genetic variations of COVID as it evolves.

The new travel restrictions implemented on December 20 are in addition to the ones Canada has had in place since March 2020. While some new immigrants, foreign workers, international students, and family members are exempt from the restrictions, most other foreign nationals have been unable to travel to Canada over this period. With few exceptions, those entering Canada are subject to mandatory 14-day quarantine.

UK has recently seen the new strain of the virus which is the reason Canada and other countries are currently banning the flights from UK in order to prevent the spread. We have to see how the situation goes considering the new virus and on the other hand the vaccine is claimed to be prepared.

Canada, like other countries, has started the campaign for vaccination to overcome the situation and going to prepare new policy to prevent the further spread of the virus keeping the current situation in the picture. We have to wait for the update from the government to see what will be the next step as the three-day ban ends today. Keep checking our pages to see the latest updated in the light of current scenario.
