Canada announces another extension for restrictions on international travel in order to prevent the spread of coronavirus in the country. Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Bill Blair tweeted, “Our Government will never hesitate to take the strong action needed to keep Canadians safe from COVID-19 while maintaining essential trade with our international partners.”
It is also announced that the restriction put previously on US travelers will be valid until at least February 21.
The travel restrictions that are in effect since March 2020 ban most foreign nationals from entering Canada for non-essential travel. The latest extension brings the timing of international travel restrictions in alignment with those governing the Canada-US land border.
In spite of the travel restrictions imposed here, the Canadian citizen and residents can return to Canada and also, invite the immediate family members. Canadian government has allowed certain exemption from the travel restrictions where individual with valid reason are allowed to travel.
Since January 7, 2021, Canada has implemented a requirement for international travelers aged five years or older will have to go through COVID-19 Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) test that is done within 72 hours of the planned departure and present the proof of the negative result. It is required before a person is allowed to board any flight for Canada. This requirement was announced by Transport Canada on December 31. Please note that this requirement does not exempt traveler from mandatory 14-day quarantine period. A quarantine plan must be prepared prior to arrival in Canada to specify where and how it will be carried out.
In addition to this, travelers to Canada must use the ArriveCAN app to send their information to Canadian border service officers and learn how to comply with coronavirus measures at the border. All incoming travelers must use the application to conduct daily self-assessment and share the contact tracing information so it can be shared with the provinces and territories to ensure that the quarantine process is completed.
Quarantine is enforced in Canada for the travelers and those who break it may be subject to fines and imprisonment. Therefore, anyone traveling to Canada must comply with the rules and regulations.
In order to prevent the further spread, these restrictions are regularly extended since March and it is extended once again for all the foreigners. Although the exceptions are not changed even the restrictions remains continue to be in effect. There are a number of exceptions for immediate family members of citizens, essential workers, seasonal workers, caregivers and international students.
