Canada is extending travel restrictions from the United States (US) for one more month. Travellers from the US will be allowed to enter Canada for essential reasons only.

Prime Minister Mr. Justin Trudeau confirmed such closure by posting on Twitter that for non-essential travellers, the Canada-US border will remain closed until November 21.

Here trade shipments through railways, truckers transporting essential goods, as well as people crossing the border to carry out essential work falls under essential travel.

Apart from such reasons, Canadian citizens and permanent residents who are temporarily relocated to the US for any reason are allowed to cross the border too. Immediate Family members of these citizens and permanent residents i.e. spouses, common-law partners, children, parents or step-parents, legal guardians, and tutors can also enter to Canada from the US.

People who wish to travel for tourism, shopping, or entertainment will be deported to their home country. They are even not allowed to enter via the US border.

A few days back Canada announced some allowances against restrictions for extended family members, students, and people travelling to Canada for compassionate reasons. They do not need any essential reason to enter but strictly they will have to stay in the country for at least 15 days.

Travellers who wish to be present for compassionate reasons i.e for a funeral, to be present during the last moments of life for a loved one, or provide medical support are also allowed to travel to Canada.

From October 20, Students who have enrolled in Designated Learning Institute which are approved under coronavirus-readiness plans can travel to Canada.

The only condition to enter to the country is that the travellers will have to self-quarantine for 14 days. The presence of an adequate quarantine plan is must for them once they arrive at the border.

On a Global News radio show, “The Start” a few days back, Mr. Trudeau announced that the border will remain closed until coronavirus numbers go down in the US.

“We have committed to keeping Canadians safe and we keep extending the border closures because the United States is not in a place where we would feel comfortable reopening those borders,”

“The U.S. still has the highest total number of coronavirus cases in the world, reporting over 8 million cases. Canada has reported nearly 200,000 cases” he added.
