UK introduces new fast-track NHS Visa for doctors and nurses

The UK introduces a new visa that allows foreign doctors, nurses, and health professionals to work in the National Health Service (NHS) for professionals from many countries including India.

According to the Health Minister, Helen Whately, it will be the fast-track pathway with a reduced visa fee for health professionals to work in the UK. It was announced after the announcement of a new points-based immigration system that will be introduced later this year.

This visa would apply to all of the UK and will be helpful to fulfill the shortage of the nursing staff at NHS Grampian and the crisis of the general practitioner doctors in Scotland.

Although NHS Visa may not apply to the nurses in social care and the workforce shortage is created in the sector a well, to which the government acknowledged that they are aware of the shortage and ensure that the workers will be recruited and paid well.

 

Why the need for fast-track entry?

NHS People Plan of government shows that there is a significant shortage of nurses and doctors at many places which they are supposed to fulfill at the earliest.

The plan states that they have the aim to increase the nursing workforce by 40,000 new recruits by 2024 and reduce the vacancy created in the field by 5% by 2028. In addition to the other measure, they are planning to increase the recruitment of international professionals in the short and medium-term.

 

How does the policy work?

Under this new policy, qualified doctors, nurses, and allied healthcare professionals who have job offers from NHS and have the training to a recognized standard will be offered fast-track entry, reduced visa fees, and support to come to the UK.

In addition to the medical practitioners and nurses, the social workers, graphic designers, musicians, and artists are included in the shortage list.

According to the UK’s visa and immigration division, Indian professional with skilled occupation offer for the job listed in shortage list can apply for a work visa under the Tier 2 (General) visa category.

The visa application fee will be £ 464 (INR 43,000) for working there up to 3 years and 928 (INR 86,000) for more than three years.
