The US Embassy in India has announced that it is on track to issue more than one million non-immigrant visas to Indian citizens this year. To achieve this goal, the Embassy is increasing its staff, expanding its drop-box facilities, and opening up interview slots over the weekend. The waiting time for visas has already decreased significantly, and the Embassy aims to process visas at pre-Covid levels by the summer.

The non-immigrant visa categories include those for business, travel, student visas, and crew visas. The Embassy has already processed over 200,000 applications this year, and its plan is to process one million visa applications, which include non-immigrant visas of all categories.

The US Department of State processed around nine million non-immigrant visa applications worldwide in 2022, according to the Embassy. However, the one million visa plan is an India-specific effort to further strengthen the people-to-people ties between the two countries.

For Indian citizens seeking a US visa, the purview of the interview waiver was recently expanded. The drop-box facility, which is used to renew a US visa without having to go through the interview, is now applicable to various categories, including student visas, business and tourist visas, and skilled worker visas.

The US Mission has offices in Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, besides the national capital, and has increased the strength of its consular staff. Julie Stufft, the Deputy Assistant Secretary for visa services in the Bureau of Consular Affairs, had recently said, “India is the number one priority now.”

Overall, the US Mission is taking several measures to smoothen the visa application process for Indian citizens, and the recent announcement of issuing one million visas to Indians this year is a significant step towards strengthening the bilateral ties between the two countries.
