Where are Canada’s immigrants coming from in 2020?

Canada’s immigrants

Canada is one of the most desirable destinations to pursue foreign studies and settle down. Prior to the pandemic situation and lockdown in March, Canada was regularly welcoming the immigrants. Canada, before lockdown, came with a new plan where they were going to invite over 1 million new permanent residents between the year 2020 and 2022.

Currently, Canada is going through the travel restrictions that were applied since March 2020 where the exemptions were given in certain cases. Although Canada continued to process the immigration application even in the situation. Immigration, Refugee, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) provided an overview where they have shown where the immigrants are coming from in early 2020. According to the data, 74,000 new permanent residents are welcome until the end of April.

India still on the top of the list

As it has seen in the trend of recent years, the Indians are highest in number to receive Canadian PR. In the first four months of 2020, Indians hold the top position with 24% out of the total invited applicants.

The major reason for India being the leading source is that the many applicants are fluent in English and become eligible in various factors like age, education, work experience, and sometimes additional factors like a relative in Canada, Canadian education, and Canadian work experience. Many Indians shift to Canada from the US as it is usually difficult for H1-B visa holders to obtain permanent residence in the US.

Top 10 source countries for Canadian PR

The following is the list of top 10 countries from where the people have gained the PR in Canada until April 2020:

  1. India
  2. China
  3. Philippines
  4. USA
  5. Nigeria
  6. Pakistan
  7. Syria
  8. France
  9. Iran
  10. Brazil

In these data, the share of China is 10% out of total which was 9% in 2019, while the Filipino immigrants hold 7% which was 8 last year.

Impact of COVID-19 on the immigrant source countries:

It is still not clear how exactly the pandemic is going to affect the source countries of immigrants to Canada during the rest of the year. The disruption caused by the situation has restricted most of the new permanent residents to come to Canada from abroad. Hence it may affect the distribution of immigrant source countries in the latter part of the year. But on the other hand, Canada is regularly holding the draw and invites the applicants for Invitation to Apply as well as provincial nominations where a major part of candidates belong to the top source countries which may not affect the immigrant source countries.

Despite the travel restrictions, the candidates are advised to go ahead and submit their Express Entry profiles and immigration applications during the pandemic if they have the ability to do so. Submitting a profile or application gives you a chance to receive an invitation to apply, or approval for permanent residence, and the chance to travel to Canada as soon as you are able to do so.

Even if you encounter some difficulties, IRCC is being more lenient during this time to help people achieve their Canadian immigration goals.
