Alberta Advantage Immigration Program Gets a Boost: 5 Key Announcements

Alberta Announcements
  • April 4, 2023

On April 3, Premier Danielle Smith announced five new changes to the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) that will make it simpler for in-demand foreign workers and entrepreneurs to get permanent residency (PR) and move to Alberta.

  • Working with the Federal Economic Mobility Pathways Pilot to Help Refugees

The AAIP will work with the federal Economic Mobility Pathways Pilot to help refugees with the necessary skills and certifications to come to Alberta through current economic programs. This will provide more opportunities for refugees to resettle and rebuild their lives in Alberta.

  • A Dedicated Pathway for Medical Professionals

Danielle also announced that they will create a dedicated pathway for medical professionals. Up to 30% of Alberta’s Express Entry Stream allocation in 2023 will be reserved for health-care professionals. These healthcare professionals will need an Alberta job offer from a healthcare sector employer and meet the requirements to work in one of the eligible health occupations.

  • Streamlining the Application Process for the Rural Renewal Stream

Alberta is streamlining the application process to attract and retain workers under the rural renewal stream. Removing the necessity for a letter from a settlement agency will let rural towns attract, recruit, and welcome newcomers based on local needs. This will provide more opportunities for workers to move to rural Alberta.

  • Lowered Investment Requirement for Rural Entrepreneurs

In an effort to encourage entrepreneurship in rural Alberta towns, the investment requirement for the Rural Entrepreneur Stream has been reduced to $100,000. This change will make it easier for eligible entrepreneurs to launch or acquire an existing business in participating towns.

  • Direct Line for Applicants

Alberta is also starting a new phone line that links AAIP staff members directly with applicants for help and information. This initiative is aimed at streamlining the application process and improving communication between the applicants and the staff.

Overall, these new changes to the AAIP will make it easier for people to move to Alberta, work, and raise their families in the province. Over 50,000 individuals from all around the world will have chosen Alberta as a destination to invest, work, and raise their families in 2022.
