The Australian government is set to overhaul its immigration system in order to speed up the process of bringing highly skilled workers into the country. The new system will also focus on making the permanent residency process smoother and more efficient. This comes as the federal Labor government has announced plans to modify the points test currently used to select skilled migrants, with a view to including candidates who are better for the Australian economy.

The government aims to implement a new system similar to those used in Canada and Germany to attract more skilled migrants to the country, as Australia faces an aging population and a corresponding shortage of skilled workers. Additionally, the visa process for high-skilled professionals will be streamlined to make it quicker and easier, while steps will be taken to retain international students.

Under the new system, temporary skilled visa holders who have been denied the opportunity to apply for permanent residency will be able to do so by the end of this year. The move is expected to encourage more foreign workers to seek employment in Australia, especially in areas where there are significant shortages of skilled workers.

In September, the Australian government raised its intake of permanent migrants to 195,000, up by 35,000, in response to widespread staff shortages faced by businesses. As part of its ongoing efforts to address the labor shortage, from 1st July the government will raise the migrant wage threshold of temporary skilled workers to A$70,000 from A$53,900, the first change since 2013.

Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil said the current migration system is “broken” and “failing our businesses, migrants themselves, and most importantly, Australians.” The government hopes the new immigration system will address these issues and attract more highly skilled workers to the country.
