According to Canada’s Immigration Levels plan for 2022-24, it will look to welcome almost 432,000 new immigrants this year instead of its initial plan to welcome 411,000 newcomers.
Over the coming three years, Canada will target the following number of new immigrant landings:
“Immigration has helped shape Canada into the country it is today,” Immigration Minister Sean Fraser said in a statement. “We are focused on economic recovery, and immigration is the key to getting there.”
In 2022, a total of 56% of new immigrants will arrive under economic class pathways such as Express Entry, the Provincial Nominee Program, and the Temporary to Permanent Residence (TR2PR) stream.
In 2022, the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) is expected to admit 83,500 newcomers into Canada with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. IRCC has cut Express Entry admissions by 50% for this year but aims to return to the regular levels of 111,5000 immigrants annually expected by 2024.
Seems like the levels plan indicates that IRCC is temporarily reducing Express Entry admissions in order to accommodate more people under the TR2PR program. The IRCC is aiming to bring in 40,000 immigrants this year and will be trying to land a final 32,000 immigrants by 2023 under the TR2PR stream.
In the meantime, Express Entry draws are continuing on a biweekly basis and IRCC is processing Express Entry applications.
The family class is set to make up 24% of admissions targets in 2022. There will be 80,000 coming in under the Spouses, Partners and Children Program and 25,000 people are expected to arrive under the Parental and Grandparents program (PGP). The IRCC has increased admissions by 1,500 spots compared with their previous plan.
The remaining 20% of immigrants will arrive under refugee and humanitarian programs. That’s about 5% more than the last immigration levels plan, which is likely due to Canada wanting to resettle 40,000 Afghan refugees over the coming years.
