Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) held its first-ever Express Entry draw for candidates with experience in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) occupations on July 5, 2023.
A total of 500 candidates were invited to apply for permanent residence. The minimum CRS score required for this round was 486.
This draw was expected, as IRCC announced last week that it would be holding a STEM-specific draw in July.
The government has made it clear that it is committed to attracting skilled workers in STEM occupations to Canada. These occupations are in high demand in the Canadian economy, and the government is hoping to fill these gaps with skilled immigrants.
If you are a skilled worker with experience in a STEM occupation, you should consider submitting your Express Entry profile as soon as possible. The next round of STEM-specific draws could be held at any time.
Here are some of the eligible occupations for the STEM draw:
On May 31, Sean Fraser, Canada’s Minister of Immigration, announced the finalization of new category-based selection criteria for Express Entry draws. These categories, including healthcare and STEM professions, were chosen based on labor market projections and extensive consultations with IRCC partners, stakeholders, provincial governments, and territorial governments. The categories also include trades, transportation, agriculture, agri-food, and strong French-language proficiency.
Category-based selection draws have been expected since June 2022 when changes were made to the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, enabling the selection of immigrants based on key attributes that support Canada’s economic priorities, such as specific work experience to address labor market gaps and French language proficiency.
