Under the new guidelines, applicants for the Canada Study Visa via SDS will only need an overall score of 6 in the IELTS (Academic) test, with no minimum band requirement for each module, starting from August 10, 2023.

This change is a significant departure from the previous requirement and is aimed at making the study visa application process more accessible for international students.

Example of Eligibility Calculation

To clarify, if an applicant scores 5.5 in Reading and Writing and 6.5 in Speaking and Listening, their overall score would still be 6, making them eligible for the SDS study visa. It’s important to note that the IELTS score requirements under General Training (GT) for other visa categories will continue to require a band score of 6.0 in each module (Reading, Listening, Writing, and Speaking).

Official Confirmation and Sources

The information regarding the revised IELTS score requirements for SDS study visa has been officially confirmed by IDP IELTS. INC News reached out to IDP IELTS to verify this information, and they responded, confirming the changes mentioned above. Additionally, this information has been published in the Canada Gazette, Part I, Volume 157, Number 21: GOVERNMENT NOTICES, further validating its authenticity.

This confirmation brings much-needed clarity and excitement for students who previously faced challenges due to their scores in specific modules. Now, even if an applicant has a score lower than 6 in one or two modules but maintains an overall score of 6, they can apply for the SDS study visa.

New English Tests Approved by IRCC

In addition to the changes in IELTS score requirements, the Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has also approved four new English language examinations for the SDS study visa. These new tests will be accepted as evidence of English proficiency starting from August 10, 2023. The approved English proficiency tests are:

  • Pearson PTE Academic
  • TOEFL internet-based Test (iBT)
  • Canadian Academic English Language Assessment (CAEL)

These new options provide flexibility for students to choose an English language examination that best suits their strengths and preferences.
