Canada is increasing the fees for all permanent residence applications on 30th April. These increases will be applicable to all economic, permit holders, family and humanitarian classes

Additionally, you may have to pay a $500 right of permanent residence fee. You can pay this when you submit your application, or when it is approved. If an application is denied, a refund will be issued. This fee is reserved exclusively for people approved for permanent residence.

However, it must be paid in order for permanent residency status to be activated.

The right of permanent residence fee does not apply to:

  • the dependent children of a principal applicant or sponsor,
  • sponsorship applications for adopted children,
  • sponsorship applications for an orphaned brother, sister, niece, nephew or grandchild, or
  • protected persons, including applicants eligible on humanitarian and compassionate grounds and convention refugees.

There will be no increase in the fees for permanent resident cards, permanent resident travel documents, or certification or replacement immigration documents.

The Canadian government favors a cost-effective approach to financing government programs, in which most of the costs are borne by those who receive the services and not taxpayers.

These fee increases allow Canada to remain competitive and in line with fees charged by other immigrant-receiving countries. In comparison to other countries with similar immigration systems, such as Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States, Canada’s fees are often lower.

According to the Consumer Price Index, fees are expected to increase by $5 in two years. The next fee increase at the federal level is expected to be announced in 2024.
