Canada held its fifth Express Entry draw of the year on March 02, inviting 1,047 PNP candidates to apply for Canadian immigration.
To be eligible for this draw, candidate needed to have a minimum CRS score of 710 points. When a PNP candidate is nominated, an additional 600 points are automatically added to their score, which is why the minimum score was so high.
The latest draw saw the tie-breaking rule implemented on January 5, 2022 at 10.22am EST. If more than one candidate had the minimum CRS score, only those who submitted their Express Entry profiles before this date and time received invitations.
Invited candidates now have 60 days to apply for Canadian permanent residence.
In the previous round of invitations, IRCC invited a total of 1,082 PNP candidates to apply for Canadian immigration.
The Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) will be the primary admissions program for economic immigrants, with Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) aiming to enrol 83,500 entrants under the PNP in 2022.
The new Express Entry targets are nearly half of what the previous multi-year levels plan called for. According to Canada’s 2021-2023 levels plan, the number of Express Entry immigrants in 2021 is expected to be 108,500.
The Express Entry target for next year is also reduced, compared to previous targets, to 75,750, but hopes to revert to regular Express Entry admissions levels by 2024, when it expects 111,500 Express Entry immigrants to arrive.
As of February 1, there are more Express Entry applications in the queue than Canada needs to meet its targets for the year. This is why Canada reduced targets. The reduction also appears to be part of an IRCC effort to process applications for the Temporary Residence to Permanent Residence (TR2PR) program, and accommodate the goal of resettling 40,000 Afghan refugees.
Canada’s most popular immigration programs use the online Express Entry system to manage applications. Express Entry is a system that the federal government uses to manage applications for Canada’s three main economic-class programs: the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), the Federal Skilled Trades Class (FSTC) and the Canadian Experience Class (CEC). In addition to that, the most provinces also have immigration streams that are aligned with the Express Entry system.
Express Entry uses a points-based system (CRS) that ranks candidates. If they score high enough, they will get an Invitation to Apply and the chance to apply for permanent residency.
After the application has been submitted to the IRCC, an officer will review it and make a decision. They may then ask for more information, including biometrics, or request an interview.
If the application is approved, IRCC issues a Confirmation of Permanent Residence. Approved permanent residents are then able to complete their landing process and get settled in Canada. If a permanent resident is abroad, they can avail of pre-arrival services beforehand to help them with their final journey
