On March 30, Canada invited 919 Express Entry candidates to apply for permanent residence.

As part of the new invitation round, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) only invited candidates from the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP). Candidates had to have at least 785 points on the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) to be invited. Since PNP candidates get an automatic 600 points when nominated, the minimum score was relatively high. Without the nomination, the lowest-scoring candidates would have had 185 base points.

The tie-breaking rule implemented on November 15, 2021 at 4.23pm EST. If more than one candidate had the minimum CRS score, only those who submitted their Express Entry profiles before this date and time received invitations.

Invited candidates now have 60 days to apply for Canadian permanent residence.

IRCC is continuing to avoid conducting all-program draws, the last of which took place in December 2020. According to the statement, it will focus on clearing the backlog before it resumes issuing ITAs in larger numbers.

Canada has so far issued 6,470 invitations, all to PNP candidates, in 2022. In 2022, this was the seventh invitation round for Express Entry and the 219th overall.

What is Express Entry?

Express Entry is an immigration system implemented by Canadian immigration authorities (IRCC) on January 1, 2015 which manages skilled worker applications under Federal Economic programs. This includes the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Federal Skilled Trades Program the Canada Experience Class and parts of the Provincial Nomination Programs.

As Canada builds toward its target of 411,000 permanent residents by 2022, stakeholders anticipate another high number of invitations being issued. It remains difficult to predict CRS scores when it comes to program-specific draws during the COVID-19 crisis.

With the outbreak of Coronavirus in March 2020, Canada started holding program-specific draws for candidates for the Canadian Experience Class and Provincial Nominee Program. This resulted in significantly more individual draws than in previous years.
