India has solidified its position as the top provider of new Canadian immigrants, maintaining its lead over Nigeria, the Philippines, and China. The first two quarters of 2023 have seen Canada welcome a total of 263,180 new immigrants, with a remarkable 84,000 originating from India. Looking back, 437,610 individuals were granted new permanent resident status in Canada last year, of which 232,120 were received in the first half of 2022.

India Tops the Charts in New Citizens

The year 2023 witnessed the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) processing 177,415 citizenship applications between January and June. Of these, a notable 35,000 applications came from Indian nationals. In terms of sources of new citizens, Filipinos, Nigerians, Syrians, and Pakistanis follow Indians closely as part of the top 5. Although the uptake of citizenship has decreased compared to 2022, where Canada embraced 232,120 new citizens during the same period, this trend underlines India’s continuous significance.

India’s Role in International Education

Canada’s allure as an education destination extends beyond immigration. The first half of 2023 welcomed 434,899 fresh international students, and over 40% of them hailed from India. Nigeria, the Philippines, China, and Nepal also contribute to Canada’s diverse international student population. Contrasting this with the previous year, only 292,376 study permit applications were approved by the IRCC in the same time frame. This discrepancy underscores the substantial growth in international student interest.

Visitor Visas: A Strong Indian Presence

The IRCC’s recent data on visitor visa processing for the first half of 2023 highlights that 299,062 visitor visas were approved for Indian nationals. Notably, the aggregate figure for visitor visas approved in the first two quarters of 2023 stands at 987,877, indicating a mere 14% reduction compared to the full year count of 1,154,945 in 2022.

Here’s a breakdown of visitor visas approved by the IRCC for some of the major source countries:

  • India: 299,062
  • People’s Republic of China: 103,707
  • Ukraine: 97,057
  • Nigeria: 57,208
  • Philippines: 45,265
  • Pakistan: 29,070
  • Iran: 27,123
  • Socialist Republic of Vietnam: 24,319
  • Algeria: 22,486
  • Jamaica: 15,444

It’s important to note that these figures encompass foreign nationals arriving as tourists or to visit family and friends, excluding visas issued to temporary foreign workers, foreign students, diplomats, and similar categories.

The Steady Influx of New Immigrants

Over the last five years, Canada has experienced an influx of 1,690,480 new permanent residents from 2018 to 2022. The country is on track to achieve its ambitious goal of welcoming a total of 465,000 new permanent residents in 2023, with an impressive 263,180 newcomers having already arrived in the first half of the year.

In conclusion, India’s pivotal role in supplying new Canadian immigrants remains unwavering, underscoring the strong bond between the two nations. The immigration landscape continues to evolve, shaping Canada’s multicultural identity and its future as a global destination for individuals seeking new opportunities and a better life.
