Canada is set to introduce a new program aimed at attracting tech talent, including H1B visa holders from the United States (US). This initiative is expected to greatly benefit Indian tech professionals, who accounted for nearly 75% of H1B visas granted in recent years.

“With Canada’s first-ever Tech Talent Strategy, we are actively seeking newcomers who can help establish Canada as a global leader in emerging technologies,” said Minister Sean Fraser of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.

As part of the program, an open work permit stream will be created specifically for H-1B specialty occupation visa holders in the US. This will allow them to apply for Canadian work permits, explore study opportunities, and seek work options for their accompanying family members. The new work permits will be available starting July 16 and will have a validity of three years. Spouses and dependents will also be eligible to apply for temporary resident visas, along with work or study permits as required.

This special measure will be in effect for one year or until 10,000 applications are received by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. The program is being implemented despite the current narrative of layoffs in the US, particularly in the tech sector.

Additionally, Canada plans to offer open work permits for up to five years to highly skilled workers in select in-demand occupations, as well as for employees of companies contributing to the country’s innovation goals.

Furthermore, Canada aims to attract “digital nomads” by allowing them to live and work in the country for up to six months, even if they are employed by foreign companies. If they receive a job offer while in Canada, they will be permitted to continue working in the country.
