The UK government has announced a planned increment in the minimum annual salary threshold for British citizens and permanent residents seeking to sponsor a spouse or partner on a Family Visa. Instead of an immediate surge to GBP 38,700, the increase will occur in stages, as confirmed in a response to a written parliamentary question in the House of Lords.

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak emphasized the importance of the principle that individuals bringing dependents into the country must be capable of supporting them. Speaking during a visit to Lincoln in eastern England, Sunak outlined that the initial threshold hike to GBP 29,000 is set to be implemented in early 2024. He further stated that the higher end of the increase is anticipated by early 2025.

Sunak clarified, “We’re increasing the salary threshold significantly, and we’re going exactly as we said we were doing it – we’re just doing it in two stages.”

The update contrasts with earlier statements by Home Secretary James Cleverly, who had indicated in the Commons that the threshold would directly jump to GBP 38,700, aligning with the minimum salary requirement for the Skilled Worker visa route. This adjustment, expected to impact many individuals, has been described by the Opposition as a “rowing back.”
